KAPOW = Kevin’s Art Project of the Week

The Olympic Peninsula has spectacular cloudscapes. This week, there were many, many interesting clouds. Here, for the KAPOW, I include a photographic study of three cloud scenes. I am sure there will be more cloud studies as the KAPOW goes forward (so I am including a sequence number).

A great late-summer week on the Olympic Peninsula required many walks on the beach……which meant that other planned KAPOW projects did not get complete. KAPOW 2020 week 10 includes a set of three photographs from an early morning walk on the beach at extreme low tide.

Photo #1: The August Snow Globe
Photo #2: Great Blue
Photo #3: Big Bird and Little Bird

On an early morning walk along the beach, we were watching a family of otters (there were five) eating some sort of sea snack on a rock just out from the beach (fish? crab?). A bald eagle swooped in, I suppose trying to steal the food prize (as eagles do). I snapped a series of pictures on my phone and stitched them together here in one frame. The eagle swooped in, but did not get the prize.

Four photos from atop Del Monte Ridge–just east of Constance Pass–in the Olympics. The hike up was a marathon along the Dosewallips River and then up-up-up. The totals were: somewhere around 25 miles (out-and-back), 4000+ feet of elevation, and 13.5 hours! The day was mostly cloudy and afforded these amazing views of the rolling clouds.

This week I created a suede trivet/hot mat. Is it art? Craft? It is KAPOW. What is your definition of art?

Here are some photos of the creation process.

I had other plans for this week’s KAPOW. I completed both a leather-working project and my first ever wood-turned segmented bowl (on the lathe)…..but those will be lost to history (maybe Instagram?).

On July 26 (Sunday), I did a mammoth hike–the on the map elevation difference was 4200 feet–in the Hamma Hamma drainage up to the (unnamed) pass above Lake of the Angels. In these COVID-19 times, I was waiting on some fellow trail hikers to pass….as I was waiting I snapped some photos of these flowers and really liked the ultra-blue sky and blurred background of the ‘ring of trees’.

On a recent hike in the Olympics, I came across this tree (below).

Tree with a face.

Naturally, I saw the face…..who doesn’t see the face? I thought a digital painting would bring this Ent to its full glory.

Use the image comparison below to see the transformation of the painting.

The hike started out in the clouds. When I reached tree line, I broke above the clouds and could see for miles in every direction. As I watched the lower valley clouds rumble, a series of higher clouds rolled through. I had the camera set up at a five second increment. I ate a snack, checked the phone, then just watched. Truly a magical experience.

There is a giant dust spot on the lens…..everything I did to correct it made it worse. I was able to mitigate it on the ‘cloudy’ frames, but for the clear ones you will see the spot. Character? I say yes.

Cutting Board

KAPOW = Kevin’s Art Project of the Week

A woodworking project–a basketweave-like pattern in an end-grain cutting board. Every woodworker makes a cutting board at some point……integrating a fun pattern to it makes it intriguing. The light grained wood is maple and the darker (with blonde highlights) is walnut. In the future I will be sure to capture more of the as-building steps (I did a poor job of that here).

Enjoy a few more photos of the completed board.
